Tell me how you feel about Dist. 211 strike

By the time you read this, we'll know if there's a teachers' strike in Palatine-Schaumburg High School District 211.

Admittedly, that's where most of my time has been spent lately, waiting for negotiations and writing stories. With two schools in the village, I'm curious on how Hoffman Estates residents are being affected by the talks. E-mail me your stories and your thoughts on what's going on. I'd love to read them.

Don't forget the turkey:ŒIt's the first week of November, and I'm already seeing candy canes on the shelves.

The taste of melted peppermint drenched in hot chocolate is surely something to savor and look forward to, but it's November, not December.

I turn on the radio. There's already two stations that have gone the 24/7 holiday musical format. "Jingle Bell Rock" is cute when there are kids wearing their little mittens. But November is still sweater weather in my book.

Obviously Thanksgiving hasn't happened yet, and we can't overlook turkey and stuffing, can we?

Well the village's commission for senior citizens isn't, which shouldn't be a big surprise. Its largest event -- the Harvest Luncheon -- is set for noon, Wednesday at The Stonegate, 2401 W. Higgins Road.

For $18 attendees will get food, door prizes and entertainment. Registration closes on Friday, so call (847) 781-2606 for more information, or write down your name, address and phone numbers of all attendees and send it to village hall, 1900 Hassell Road, Hoffman Estates, IL 60169. Checks should be made to the "Village of Hoffman Estates."

Don't sleep in:ŒSaturday is a busy day in the village.

First off, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the village's environmental commission with its Schaumburg counterpart, will host an environmental fair at the Schaumburg Prairie Center for the Arts, 201 Schaumburg Court, Schaumburg. Admission is free and there are several workshops planned. Also members from the Chicago Audubon Society, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Sierra Club, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Greenpeace, Illinois Recycling Association, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Spring Valley Nature Sanctuary will be on hand. Call Kelly Kerr, village forester, at (847) 781-2710 for more information. The Schaumburg-Hoffman Estates Rotarians are sponsoring this event.

The next event is sponsored by the Sister Cities Commission in celebration of National French Week.

Scott Shepherd's "Strokes of Genius" program on French artist, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, will be presented from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Armstrong School, 1320 Kingsdale Road.

The show is accompanied by slides of Renoir's work, demonstrations of his artistic process with audience volunteers and a reenactment of his painting, "Luncheon of the Boating Party."

The program is recommended for high school students and older. Scott Shepherd, portraying Renoir, is an experienced and highly acclaimed teacher. Admission costs $3 per person, or $6 per family of three or more. Light refreshments will be served. For more information, call (847) 781-2606.
