Teddy bears join holiday festivities

You don't want to miss what Mount Prospect has for you this weekend.

It's a parade, a teddy bear walk for the kids, a concert and much more.

It's Mount Prospect's Winter Festival Extravaganza Weekend, which starts today.

It begins with the Mount Prospect Historical Society's Holiday Housewalk.

The tour, scheduled for 3:30 to 9 p.m. today, will feature the homes of Lonnquist Boulevard. Tickets are $22 on the day of the walk.

Then, from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, the Mount Prospect Public Library holds its annual Teddy Bear Walk. Children and their favorite teddy bears will join Ted E. Bear for a short stroll.

The event ends at village hall with the arrival of Santa Claus, who'll be escorted by the Mount Prospect Fire Department.

Later that day, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Friendship Park Conservatory, 395 Algonquin Road in Des Plaines, will be the site for the Mount Prospect Park District's annual Holiday Open House.

You'll be served hot cider and cookies, while you listen to holiday music and look over holiday floral displays.

There'll be crafts for the kid, ice sculptures and an opportunity for photos with Santa and live reindeer. Admission is free.

One of the weekend highlights will be the Winter Festival Parade, which steps off at 5 p.m. from Lions Park.

The parade route will proceed down Lincoln Street to Emerson Street, Emerson Street to Prospect Avenue, west on Prospect Avenue, ending at the corner of Prospect Avenue and Pine Street.

Choral groups will be stationed along the parade route to add to the holiday spirit.

The parade will feature live reindeer, marching bands, floats and Santa and Mrs. Claus.

A refreshment tent will be set up along Prospect Avenue and it will offer coffee and hot chocolate after the parade.

To cap it off, on Sunday the Mount Prospect Community Band will present its annual holiday concert at 4 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 605 W. Golf Road in Mount Prospect.

The concert, entitled "Christmas Spirit," will feature a variety of familiar holiday melodies and favorite carols.
