Hall of Fame has familiar look; Corning honored by league

The names are familiar, and their achievements are enormous.

There will be some prominent area people receiving recognition when the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) inducts its 2008 Hall of Fame class in April.

A complete team, two players, official, announcer and friend of basketball are ready to become an official part of this prestigious group.

The Hall of Fame ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, April 26 at Illinois State University.

The 2008 event begins with a reception from 1-5 p.m. at the Chateau. Doors open for the Hall of Fame program at 5:10 p.m. at the ISU Student Union.

The 2008 Hall of Fame class will feature Schaumburg's 2001 Class AA state boys basketball champion coached by Bob Williams; George Pomey, Prospect all-stater in 1961 who also started on Michigan's NCAA runner-up; Connie Bruns, star on Fremd's third-place state finisher in 1977; Ann Penstone, who handled the TV coverage of many sports on the IHSA network for over 30 years; Fred Allman of Addison, an IHSA official since 1987 who has worked both the basketball and football state tournaments; and Steve Shaw of Leyden, a friend of high school basketball.

Basketball

Matt Corning (Mundelein) of the University of Chicago was named athlete of the week in the University Athletic Association. The junior guard averaged 27.5 points in two games and gained all-tournament honors at DePauw. He had 29 points, 6 rebounds and a steal against Transylvania University and 26 points against DePauw.

• Johnnie Ulrich (Palatine) of Concordia University (Wis.) scored 25 points to lead the Falcons to an 88-78 win over Bethany College of Minnesota. He was 9-11 from the field and 5-6 from the 3-point line with 5 rebounds, a block and 3 steals.

• Beth Lucas (Hersey) is senior and co-captain of undefeated Lake Forest. She had 17 points against Elmhurst College and 14 against Wisconsin-La Crosse and also leads the team in assists. She was named to the all-tournament team at the Forester Tip-Off Classic.

Also joining Lucas at Lake Forest and seeing about 16 minutes of action per game is freshman Sherrie Dubinski (Hersey). She had 9 points against Elmhurst.

• Gabrielle Cottrell (Prospect) scored 21 points and pulled down 10 rebounds as Manhattan College beat Howard University 76-51 in the Brown University Tournament.

• Craig Reichel (Schaumburg) had 17 points and 6 rebounds and Jonny Reibel (Hoffman Estates) produced 15 points and 8 assists as No. 8 Rollins College beat St. Thomas University 86-63.

• Melissa Gorski (Buffalo Grove) of Monmouth College had 12 points, 5 assists, 2 blocks, 9 rebounds, 2 steals and a strong defensive game in an overtime win over Lawrence University. She tied it up to send the game into OT.

Hockey

The Lake Zurich Bears Hockey annual alumni game will be held on Saturday, Dec. 29 from 8-10 p.m. at the Barrington Ice Arena.

The game matches the 2007-08 varsity Bears with the alumni.

Because of the growing size of the alumni group, the number of players will be limited to 22 skaters and goalies. Cost per player is $40 to cover the cost of ice time and referees.

Proceeds collected beyond the game costs go to the Alumni Association.

Players must register for the LZBHC Alumni Association to participate.

The alumni will practice on Saturday, Dec. 22 from 9:40-10:40 p.m. at the West Meadows Ice Rink.

Soccer

Senior forward Lissa Coby (Grant) of Saint Xavier University was named to the NAIA All-Region VII Women's Soccer Team. Also an all-conference selection and CCAC Player of the Year, Coby wrapped up her college career this fall with team-bests of 18 goals and 55 points. She is the school's all-time leader in goals, assists and points.

• Sophomore midfielder Ian Sarachan (Warren) added the insurance goal as the University of Illinois Chicago beat Northwestern 2-0 in NCAA tournament action.

• Junior forward Steve Stevropoulos (Stevenson) of Lake Forest College earned second team all-Midwest Conference honors.

Volleyball

Junior outside hitter Ashley Cretacci (Mundelein) of Lake Forest College was named to the second All-Midwest Conference team. She was second on Lake Forest and fifth in the conference in kills per game.

Football

Nick Torresso (Schaumburg) of Bowling Green State University (8-4, 6-2 Mid-American Conference) became a starter in the defensive line as a 6-foot-3, 290-pound true freshman and finished with 16 tackles, 1 forced fumble and 1 tackle for loss in his 7 games.

Bowling Green State has earned a bowl appearance and will play in the GMAC Bowl against Tulsa on Sunday, Jan. 6 in Mobile, Ala.

Bowling Green finished the season on a high note, winning its last four games and capturing a Co-Western Division Championship in the MAC.

The Falcons will be making their second appearance in the GMAC Bowl. In December 2004 the Falcons defeated Memphis 52-35.
