Hoffman Estates OKs outdoor events, tailgating at Sears Centre

The Sears Centre's 2,500 parking spaces just got a little more useful.

The Hoffman Estates village board Monday night approved outdoor events at the Sears Centre arena in the village's Prairie Stone Business Park off Route 59 and the Northwest Tollway.

The new village ordinance also allows tailgating before indoor events, like basketball tournaments or lacrosse games. Each outdoor event would need the consent of the village board. While tailgating wouldn't need approval, the grilling and drinking in the arena's six parking lots will have to stop at the start of the event.

The village board will look at the success of the events over an 18-month period, which allows for a full season at the Sears Centre. Trustees would then evaluate the ordinance for a possible extension.

The use of parking lots for events is common at other arenas. The Sears Centre opened last year, and spokesman Michael Millar said the law would help attract new spectators with summer draws, including RV shows or a food-themed event like a rib festival. Events would have to end at 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and at 9 p.m. on other days.

Some area residents have complained about noise as the outdoor Prairie Creek Amphitheater continues to be in the planning stages, with a May opening date across the street from the Sears Centre. A petition complaining about future concert noise has already been submitted to the village board, hearkening to concerns from residents during the operation of the Poplar Creek Music Theater, which closed in 1995.

Some events could include music, but noise would be subject to state law restrictions, according to the village ordinance. Millar additionally advised that no "loud rock shows" would take place. He wants the public to know arena management shares their concerns.

"We'll continue to be good neighbors," Millar said.

Other restrictions include prohibiting the sale, trade and display of all guns and illegal weapons. Alcohol sales are permitted with the use of wristbands for adults 21 and over.

Temporary lighting would be allowed, but under the condition that it wouldn't increase glare on neighboring properties. Lighting standards and any tents, portable toilets and stages would have to be removed from the parking lot within 24 hours of event. Organizers are required to give the village at least 45 days' notice to gain a permit.

Trustee Gary Pilafas was concerned that wouldn't be enough time, but Assistant Village Manager Mark Koplin assured it was adequate.
