Fog, high winds ground some flights at O'Hare
About 330 flights have been canceled at O'Hare International Airport since Saturday, primarily due to bad weather, the Chicago Department of Aviation said Monday.
O'Hare saw 30 flights canceled on Saturday and about 200 Sunday due to fog. About 100 were canceled by Monday afternoon mostly because of high winds, airport spokeswoman Karen Pride said.
The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch Monday, and a tornado reportedly touched down in Harvard and another near Rockford.
The two largest airlines that operate at O'Hare said the majority of flights canceled were due to weather conditions with a handful related to mechanical problems.
United Airlines, which had been criticized in recent weeks for excessive cancellations, and its Ted Airlines together dropped 10 flights Saturday, 12 Sunday and 11 by Monday afternoon, said United spokesman Jeff Kovick.
American Eagle and American Airlines had a combined eight cancellations Saturday, 73 Sunday and 36 by Monday afternoon, said American spokeswoman Mary Frances Fagan.
"This is just basic winter weather," Fagan said.
