Village honors King, diversity at annual breakfast

This week's sixth annual Martin Luther King Jr. Community Breakfast went back to its roots, as the event was held at its original venue.

About 180 people filled Poplar Creek Country Club to once again hear the sounds of the Sears Holdings Associate Gospel Choir and to honor King.

Members of the Cultural Awareness Commission aren't sure where next year's event will be held. This year, it was displaced as village hall undergoes renovations.

The one thing commission Chairwoman Pearl Henderson promised is that the event will continue to grow. She's particularly keen next year, as the village will celebrate its 50th anniversary. She promises big things.

Hoffman Estates has embraced its cultural awareness commission.

That's a contrast with Hanover Park, where some trustees have bristled as starting a diversity committee, mainly out of financial concerns, though the idea isn't yet completely dead.

Henderson didn't want to address the topic directly, but she did say she's glad she lives in Hoffman Estates where they have events like the King Breakfast and Unity Day, celebrating diversity.

Detective promoted: The police department has promoted Detective Joseph Dornbos to sergeant. A 19-year veteran of the force, Dornbos followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather.

Dornbos is also the village's first K9 officer, working with his partner, Bo, from 1995 to 2004, when Bo retired. Dornbos worked the patrol division until 2006, when he became a detective. Congrats.

Worth the wait: Children's Memorial Commission President Scott Tripahn has news about the memorial.

Statues to be used in the construction of the memorial are set to arrive on Saturday. This is a big step for the project, which has been in the works for years. Now all that's left to do is wait out this winter weather so construction can start.

The memorial, which is to recognize local children who have died, is to be built near village hall.

EJ&E meeting: Just a clarification: For those wanting to discuss the pending sale of the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway, the village will hold an informational meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at Lincoln Elementary School, 1650 Maureen Drive.

Not that there is anything else nearby named after President Lincoln.
