Attend Shamrox game, aid cancer research

Firefighters can wear pink, and, tonight, the Hoffman Estates Fire Department will prove it.

If you purchase a ticket for tonight's Chicago Shamrox lacrosse game at the Sears Centre arena and mention the fire department, a $4-per-ticket donation will go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the Cure, which was established in 1982 for breast cancer research.

"We had a few firefighters that have gone through cancer, and some wives that are going through it. We thought it was a worthwhile cause," Hoffman Estates Deputy Fire Chief John Mayer said.

Liz Collins, the wife of firefighter Matt Collins, was diagnosed with breast cancer in December. She's undergoing radiation therapy.

"Fortunately it's very mild and treatable," Matt Collins said. He is also a cancer survivor, having been diagnosed with lymphoma in 1995.

The fire department is taking advantage of the Shamrox Charity of Choice program, which enables groups, companies or individuals host a game to benefit a charity they pick out.

Shamrox spokesman Joe Stefani invites anyone who wants to sponsor a night next season to call the club office for details on how to participate. The promotion also encourages sports fans like Collins, who have never been to a lacrosse game, to get a sampling of the sport.

The fire department will have a booth on the Sears Centre concourse where guests can make donations. The department's public education trailer will also be set up at the Sears Centre parking lot, Mayer said.

To ensure the money benefits the Komen Foundation, guests should mention the Hoffman Estates Fire Department Night when purchasing tickets. Those who have already purchased tickets can call the Shamrox at (877) SHAMROX.
