Street could be named after Father Brennan

A street in Hoffman Estates could soon bear an honorary name in recognition of Rev. Patrick Brennan of Holy Family Catholic Church in Inverness.

Trustee Cary Collins said Monday that Brennan, who Sunday celebrated 35 years since he was ordained, is a positive force for the community. Collins lauded Brennan's many years at Holy Family and said his influence also touched St. Hubert Parish in Hoffman Estates.

Brennan wants to stay until 2010, which would give him 14 years, but his term expires in 2009 and the archdiocese has denied a request to extend the term. Cardinal Francis George has already granted Brennan an extra two years after his two, six-year terms expired.

Holy Family is constructing a building named after Brennan, and he wants to stay to ensure the work is finished, and to ease the transition to a new pastor.

Thornbark Drive in Hoffman Estates, which is near the Inverness church, is one option under consideration for the honorary title, though the formal name of the street would not change.

Sears Centre plan: The tornado that last month ravaged Atlanta got Trustee Ray Kincaid thinking.

Given how the tornado damaged the Georgia Dome, Kincaid asked Monday about the Sears Centre arena, and how building officials were prepared for a natural disaster.

Village Manager James Norris said officials had reviewed the Sears Centre's disaster plan during the planning stages for the facility and all was in order.

Get involved: Residents can clean up open spaces, parks and creek lines during Hoffman Estates' 10th annual Village Improvement Day, from 9 a.m. to noon April 19, with a rain date of April 26.

Environmental commission members will be on hand, and the village will supply trash bags to collect litter. The commission will give away a limited number of T-shirts to participants. Sign up by calling the village at (847) 490-6800 during weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Taking the test: Police Chief Clinton Herdegen said he's made the same offer to all Hoffman Estates reporters: take the police challenge.

Taking the test required to be considered for a cop job would give the public a good idea on what it takes to be a police officer. It would give a reporter better insight then just reading the police reports.

So, I've decided to accept the offer. On May 17, I'm going to take both the physical and written police tests.

Testing happens about every two years. I'll be writing about my experience. I think I'm in OK shape, but we'll see what happens. My grandfather was a cop, so I have that in my favor. However, that Danish I just ate weighs against me.
