Movie Night: The library will show "The 11th Hour" from 7 to 9 p.m. today. The film, produced and narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio, explores how people affect the Earth's ecosystems and what can be done to change its course.
VAPLD Extreme Makeover: The library is teaming with Michael Thomas Salon to make someone's "extreme makeover" dream come true. Applicants must explain in 200 words or less why they are in need of a makeover. The library will choose one winner to spend a day at the salon getting a facial, makeup application, new hairstyle and color. All entrants should be willing to participate in a "before and after" photo session. Entry forms are available in the library lobby and need to be turned in at the Patron Services Desk by 9 p.m. Thursday. The library will announce the winner at the Women's Wellness Day Event at 1:45 p.m. May 18. Winner does not need to be present to win.
Home remodeling: David Kunzweiler, co-owner of Cabinets Plus, Inc. in Palatine, will present a seminar titled, "So, You Want to Remodel Your Kitchen or Bath" at 7 p.m. May 8. Reservations are requested; call (847) 634-3650, ext. 137. This program is free and open to the public.
The seminar will cover trends in kitchen and bathroom design. Kunzweiler will focus on the buying options available to the consumer, the timeline for a remodeling project and the cost considerations. The seminar will include a Power Point presentation showing finished kitchens and bathrooms, and he will discuss how such remodeling projects add value to a home. After the seminar, there will be an opportunity for questions from the audience.
Writers Support Group: The Writers Support Group, led by Sandy Kamen Wisniewski, offers an opportunity for writers -- published or not -- to critique each other's work and share ideas and techniques from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on May 14 and June 11. New members are always welcome. Registration is not required.
Women's Wellness Day: The Vernon Area Public Library District will hold a Women's Wellness Day Event from noon to 2 p.m. May 28. Michael Thomas Salon invites participants to begin with makeup and hair color/style consultations. Highland Park and Fitness will lead a 20-minute yoga class (registration is required; space is limited), followed by a mini-health screening and tips for improving overall health. Libertyville Massage will offer five-minute massage. And Infini-Tea Gourmet Restaurant of Antioch will serve samples of various teas and scones. There will be a raffle for items including manicures, massages, haircuts, a three-month fitness day pass and tea gift baskets. Giveaways and refreshments will wrap up the afternoon. The winner of the VAPLD Extreme Makeover with Michael Thomas Salon also will announced. Except for the yoga class, registration is not required.
