Tales of the weird take front-and-center

In the old days, they put journals like these on the "Occult" rack at bookstores.

Most spiritually-focused, non-Christian publications would be sent to the back of the store. Banished to the weird-stuff section.

But now, they're nestled between the cooking and parenting magazines. Dozens of publications devoted to the metaphysical, astrological and paranormal line the shelves at Barnes and Noble in Vernon Hills.

Chakras, light orbs, auras and pixies. They're all good fodder for those curious about life beyond and life within.

The "World's Leading Astrology Magazine," the Dell Horoscope, has Brittney Spears all figured out. Read why she's still successful even though her personal life is a wreck. It's because of the planets. Obviously.

"Her Ascendant in attractive Libra is just beyond a conjunction with Mars in dependable and organized Virgo," explains the author. "Maybe some of the sexiness comes from the trine of Mars to Venus in practical and success-oriented Capricorn."

How can you argue with that?

Curious about what's happening in the world of gnomes, trolls and green men? Faerie Magazine, dedicated to reaching fairy lovers worldwide, comes out quarterly and is jammed with features that make Peter Pan look pedestrian.

The pamphlet, Angels on Earth, has stories about heavenly messengers interacting with common humans. "Stranger in the Surf" documents the dramatic rescue of a man after he's swallowed up by a huge Hawaiian wave. "That guy saved my life," he said. And of course, when he went to thank him, "that guy" had vanished.

If you want to communicate with people who are really "out there," check out Sedona, the Journal of EMERGENCE! The magazine from Flagstaff, Ariz. focuses on communicating "with those who wish to speak with us from other dimensions." It's $5.95.
