Case involving Lake Co. teen's death still unresolved
A Grayslake woman accused of striking and killing a Round Lake Beach teen with her car was sentence to 30 days in jail Tuesday for violating her probation from an earlier conviction.
Charges against Desiree Britt in connection with the Jan. 24 death of Alonzo De La Torre, as well as a domestic battery charge, still remain open.
Lake County Assistant State's Attorney Suzanne Willet said Britt, 22, of 22 Junior Drive, was convicted of battery in 2007 for punching another woman in the mouth. Britt was sentenced to two years on probation and ordered to perform 200 hours of public service in addition to a stayed 120-day jail sentence.
Willet said Britt performed only 28 hours of the public service and further violated her probation by testing positive for marijuana use.
A judge lifted the stay on the jail sentence April 23, and Britt has been in custody ever since.
Associate Judge Joseph Waldeck on Wednesday ordered Britt to serve an additional 30 days in jail for failing to complete the public service.
She is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 19 on charges she was driving with a trace amount of marijuana in her system when De La Torre was struck, and also had marijuana in her possession at the time.
She is also charged with child endangerment because Britt's 2-year-old daughter was in the vehicle when De La Torre was struck.
In addition, Britt is charged with domestic battery in a Feb. 13 incident in which police said she struck her boyfriend several times during an argument.
Willett said Britt faces a maximum of one year in jail if convicted of any of the charges still against her.
