Rolling Meadows reloads in a hurry

Successful programs find quality replacements for major losses in talent.

That's what has Rolling Meadows expecting to extend a school-record five straight playoff trips and defend its share of the Mid-Suburban East title.

"I've really liked this team," said Meadows coach Doug Millsaps after losing six all-area standouts. "The fun part is you have a whole new group and a lot of people don't have expectations.

"It will be fun to watch these guys. These seniors have been with us and it's their time to play."

It's also junior Jimmy Garoppolo's time to take over at quarterback after starting at outside linebacker last year. Millsaps was impressed with the speed Garoppolo showed in the summer against studs from powerhouses East St. Louis and Indianapolis Warren Central.

"He's really athletic and throws the ball well," Millsaps said. "He's got some special talent. He plays fast, has a strong arm and I expect him to get better and better."

Senior Daquan Edwards rushed for 100 yards in his three starts last year and may be the strongest player on the team. Mick Viken and Steve Orchell bring speed and athleticism to receiver and the secondary.

Senior center and third-year starter Tom Davidson anchors an experienced line.

"I would hope when things get tough and we need to grind yards we will," Millsaps said. "This group reminds me a little of 2005. They seem to control the ball and get off the football."

Erick Louis-Charles, Ernie Woodbury, T.J, Kropp and junior transfer Jordan Farnum from Prospect are keys in what should be a solid front. The key will be at linebacker where Tim Herff returns with Davidson.

"They think it's their turn for this team to be successful," Millsaps said. "As long as they pay the price -"

There could be another playoff payoff for Meadows.
