WW South (1-0) at Joliet Catholic (0-1)
WW South (1-0) at Joliet Catholic (0-1)
Nonconference
Game time: 7:30 p.m. today at Joliet Memorial Stadium.
Last year: Did not play.
Last week: WW South 28, Hinsdale Central 27, OT; Carmel 24 Joliet Catholic 14.
Outlook: It's a matchup fans have been dreaming of ever since these teams played their double-overtime Class 5A title game in 1992. WW South won that game, like two prior playoff meetings, and claimed the first of the program's five state titles. Joliet Catholic has won 13 titles including last year's 6A crown. But enough about the past. This is a one-year contract and the teams will be in separate playoff classes. So this is a one-night-only event. The Tigers won their 28th straight regular-season game last week by thwarting a 2-point conversion attempt in overtime. A fierce rally forced quarterback Joe Furco to throw the ball 37 times for 200 yards and 2 touchdowns. That wasn't the way the Tigers drew it up, and it's not the plan tonight. The Tigers and a young offensive line will try establishing the run with Peter Jarrett, who had 34 rushing yards and 45 receiving yards. JCA back Tyler Hudetz and the Hilltoppers offense were severely limited by Carmel, a trend hoped to be continued by the Tigers defense and linebacker James Eshleman.
