Waukegan shuts out Mundelein

They had to learn it the hard way, but Mundelein's football team certainly found out that MarQuezie Edmonds is all he's cracked up to be.

Waukegan's senior quarterback dazzled in Mundelein on Friday night, throwing for 188 yards and 3 touchdowns in the first half alone, as the Bulldogs won 21-0.

MarQuezie, along with his brother MarQuone and senior Denzel Ray made quite the potent trio. They hooked up on scoring passes from 35, 31 and 10 yards out.

"We were telling our defense that if (MarQuezie) gets to where he can scramble, he's very dangerous, and that's exactly what he was," Mundelein coach Bob Stone said.

But for as good of a passing night as the Bulldogs were having, the Mustangs' night was on the opposite end of the spectrum. Mundelein quarterback Brian Santiago went 0-for-2 in the entire first quarter while his offense languished with four straight three-and-outs to begin the game.

Overall, MarQuezie went 19 of 32 for 287 yards, 3 touchdowns and 1 interception. Santiago was 9 of 29 for 91 yards and 3 interceptions.

"We just have kids that have trouble catching the football, including our running backs, so that makes us a very one-dimensional team, and that makes us very easy to cover," Stone said. "Tonight, when some of our guys were wide open and they were waiting for the ball to come to them, you could tell there was just too much thinking going on."

Waukegan's spread offense truly lived up to its name as MarQuezie hooked up with no fewer than seven receivers. MarQuone led all receivers with 6 catches for 114 yards while Ray finished with 5 catches for 76 yards and 2 touchdowns. Quentin Stern had a 35-yard TD catch in the second quarter.

"Our defense can really play and you saw that tonight," Waukegan coach Pat Jennings said.

"(Mundelein) had good defense, but they were playing too much man defense, so we were able to take them apart," MarQuezie said. "We were able to take advantage early on to get quick scores."
