Montini too quick for ACC

A weather delay during a soccer game at Benedictine University Saturday pushed back the kickoff of Montini-Aurora Central's football game an hour.

Then the Broncos struck like a bolt of lightning.

Montini needed all of 10 total plays in its first four touchdown "drives" in a 49-7 Suburban Catholic Conference win in Lisle.

Ryan Gorrell took a swing pass from Tom DiCristina 55 yards for a touchdown on the Broncos' first possession. They were off to the races.

"We can't match up with them speed-wise," Aurora Central coach Mike Curry said. "That was evident right from the get-go. Teams that use speed against us make us look bad."

A steady rain did little to slow Montini's potent passing game.

DiCristina completed 9 of 11 passes for 215 yards and 3 touchdown passes. His 32-yard pass to Grant Goebel on Montini's second drive set up a 22-yard Matt Sloan touchdown run on an inside trap.

"The ball was slippery. I don't know how I got it out there like that," DiCristina said. "It was slipping out of my hands. We did it, though. It's all we could ask for in weather like this."

Aurora Central (0-3, 0-1) looked to have life just before halftime. Quarterback Mike Adams found Mark Brauweiler behind the Montini coverage for a 62-yard touchdown pass and 14-7 game with 41 seconds left.

But in a backbreaking turn of events for the Chargers, DiCristina turned what looked like a busted play into a weaving 36-yard scramble and score with 2 ticks on the clock to make it 21-7.

"That play shows you how dangerous we can be," Montini coach Chris Andriano said. "Tommy's a special player. He can make a lot of things happen."

"I saw a huge hole," DiCristina said, "and wanted to take it."

DiCristina hit Luke Furjanic for a 58-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the third quarter, Furjanic making a pretty adjustment on a ball thrown behind him and busting a tackle to daylight. Christian Westerkamp later made a diving catch in the end zone for a 22-yard touchdown reception.

"My receivers and offensive line make me look good," DiCristina said.

Adams completed 12 of 19 passes for 133 yards and an interception, made by Furjanic.

Montini (3-0, 1-0) returns to its home field next Friday against St. Francis, fresh off a statement win over Driscoll.

"They're for real," Andriano said. "It should be a heck of a game."
