Quick start powers Lake Zurich

Two-minute drills are normally reserved for the end of a football game. Luckily for Lake Zurich, the Bears' offense didn't get that memo.

During Lake Zurich's homecoming game against Mundelein, the Bears took all of 2:01 to score their first touchdown and rolled to a 34-0 win. The win evens Lake Zurich at 3-3 overall and keeps Mundelein winless at 0-6.

LZ senior Andrew Maloney put up the first score with a 17-yard run and the Bears never looked back. In all, the home team put up 261 yards on the ground from nine different ball carriers.

"I thought we did well on the ground, especially Jake Brinlee and (Devian) Ruiz," Lake Zurich coach Bryan Stortz said.

All of LZ's scores were of double-digit yardage. Long runs came from quarterback Tanner Witt with a 47-yard score in the third along with Brinlee's 22-yarder in the second. Witt also connected with John Brewer for a 14-yarder to close out the scoring.

The Bears' defensive bite more than matched the offense. Mundelein was limited to -5 yards of total offense for the entire first half. When it was all said and done, the offense put up just 47 total yards in the game.

But the big defensive play came late in the second quarter as Robby Wilson picked off an errant Mundelein pass and returned it 22 yards for the touchdown with 34 seconds left in the half.

"Our defense came out and played their best," Stortz said. "I think everyone played extremely well defensively."

The Mustangs' air attack was ineffective as quarterbacks Joe DeJesus and Aaron Metzger combined for 0-for-9 with 2 interceptions.

"(Offense) is what we've really got to work on," Mundelein coach Bob Stone said. "Our offensive line needs work (and) we have a problem with quickness. "

Mundelein exploited the Bears' weakness through the air, forcing 2 interceptions, and kept quarterback Tanner Witt to just 60 yards and 1 touchdown. But for as bad as Witt's arm was, his legs made up for the difference as he racked up 93 yards and a touchdown on just 5 carries.

Meanwhile, Stone said he was relatively pleased with his team's defensive effort.

"I thought defensively we played a pretty good football game," Stone said. "We put some pressure on the quarterback from time to time and except for giving up a few first downs on penalties, I thought our defense was pretty good from the first half."
