Schaumburg Library rated eighth in its class in nation

The Schaumburg Township District Library has been rated among the top 10 libraries in its class nationwide, according to Hennen's American Public Library Ratings published in the October issue of American Libraries Magazine.

"The library is happy to again be ranked among the top libraries in the nation," retiring Director Michael Madden said. "We strive to provide services and resources for everyone in the community - all age groups and ethnic groups - as well as develop informative and interesting programs, classes and trips."

Libraries are judged on several factors including services, circulation, collection and allocation of funds. Scores for each category are assigned to libraries in nine population categories, with the Schaumburg Township District Library ranking eighth out of 332 in the category of 100,000 to 250,000 residents.

The communities served by the library include Schaumburg, Hanover Park, Hoffman Estates, Streamwood and parts of Roselle, Elk Grove Village and some unincorporated areas.

'Hoghouse to Smokehouse': The ever-popular program "From Hoghouse to Smokehouse" will return for its ninth year at Spring Valley's Volkening Heritage Farm from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9.

This annual event is an authentic portrayal of how traditional farm families preserved the meat raised on the farm for consumption throughout the winter months, in addition to explaining traditional food preservation in general.

"Just like a traditional family farm, the Heritage Farm's livestock serve very specific functions," said Spring Valley Manager Dave Brooks. "Some are raised for food. We feel very strongly that a proper and realistic presentation of the life and eventual use of an animal demonstrates a much more humane and respectful way of raising animals for food."

Visitors will learn how the entire animal was used for multiple purposes, how meat was preserved in the smokehouse and how lard was used to make soap. Sausage-making demonstrations, craft activities, wagon rides and refreshments are also included.

Admission is $2 per person or $8 for a family of six or fewer with each additional member at $2 each. Children 3 and under are free.

Spring Valley and Volkening Heritage Farm are located at 1111 E. Schaumburg Road. Call (847) 985-2100 or visit parkfun.com.
