Des Plaines shuts down concrete-crushing business

Des Plaines last week shut down a concrete-crushing business operating at 351 W. Touhy Ave., Mike Spiel, deputy director of community development, said Monday.

Bensenville-based Earth Inc. was using the site to grind up concrete from O'Hare International Airport for reuse, he said. But Des Plaines doesn't allow concrete-crushing operations, he said.

"They can't do this kind of work in Des Plaines," he said. "It's noisy. You can feel the ground shake."

The fine for a violation is $150, Spiel said.

Spiel said he didn't know how long the work had been going on in the industrial area along Touhy Avenue, but that the city began investigating immediately after receiving a complaint last week. "It was the first time we heard of it," he said.

An official with Earth Inc. couldn't be immediately reached for comment.
