Broken rail stalls Metra trains in suburbs

Metra officials say commuters are experiencing delays of up to 30 minutes on the Union Pacific West Line because of a broken rail in the vicinity of the Berkeley train depot.

Officials said the broken rail has been repaired, but there are speed restrictions in place over the rail.

One train was canceled due to the broken rail, officials said. Others are still operating between 10 and 30 minutes behind schedule.

The west line makes stops in West Chicago, Wheaton and Glen Ellyn.

Simultaneously, Metra officials announced trains operating on the Union Pacific Northwest Line are operating between 20 and 50 minutes behind schedule due to freight train interference.

The northwest line makes stops in Crystal Lake, Barrington, Arlington Heights and Des Plaines.

Officials said they are working to get the system back up and running without delays.
