Sarantakis stars for Fremd

Tori Sarantakis swept to first places in three of the four events to lead Fremd to the team championship of the Mike Williams Big Purple girls gymnastics invite at Downers Grove North.

The Vikings hit a score of 107.95 to outdistance runner-up Sandburg (104.25) in the 12-team field. Finishing fifth was Libertyville (98.25), while Hersey (95.0) was seventh.

En route to her trio of first-place medals, Sarantakis vaulted to a 9.525, hit 9.6 on uneven bars and recorded a 9.375 on floor exercise. For good measure, Sarantakis added a third place on balance beam with a mark of 8.625.

Fremd's Caitlin Golota was third in vault with a 9.475 and second on bars with 9.3.

Girls bowling

Fremd Valhalla invite: Led by Amanda Karmuth's 660 series, Oswego East powered to the championship of the 2008 Fremd Valhalla invite at Arlington Lanes.

Karmuth rolled games of 201, 244 and 215.

Leyden finished fourth in the 16-team field, while Buffalo Grove took fifth, Lake Zurich eighth, Vernon Hillls ninth, Fremd 11th and Stevenson 12th.

Leyden junior Jenny Schauenburg placed ninth in the final individual standings with a 571 series that included games of 190, 180 and 201. Junior teammate Rebecca Radek took 13th with a 556 series and a high game of 196, and Leyden senior Ashley Henk was 18th with 542 and 202.

Leading Fremd was junior Melany Butz in 18th place with a 529 series and 182 high game.

Buffalo Grove freshman Mariah McVay was 21st with 515 and 186, and BG sophomore Kara Zukoski was 25th with 508 and 223.

Lake Zurich's Colleen O'Donovan was 24th with 509 and 179, For Vernon Hills, Nicole Sanhamel was 27th with 502 and 190.
