Streamwood routs Fenton 51-31

Collecting her second double-double in as many games, Streamwood center Emma Schmidt demonstrated that even the Bison couldn't trample her as the Sabres routed Fenton 51-31 in nonconference girls basketball action Monday.

With 20 points, the sophomore's 10 rebounds nearly matched Fenton's collective tally of 15. Of her 20 points, Schmidt recorded 10 points via the second chance, connecting several times off her own offensive boards.

"Our size contributed, but overall it was an excellent team effort that got us the win," Schmidt said. "We came out strong and we played consistent basketball which led to a solid four-quarter effort."

While Schmidt hoped to match or top her career-high 21 points of last week, she sat the fourth quarter and took pride in nearly matching it the first 24 minutes.

"The team was getting the ball inside all night," Schmidt said. "It was just a great feeling to be able to do this at home with our fans cheering."

Defensively, Streamwood (5-11) held the Bison to single-digit scoring in the first three quarters, and finished the game with 38 rebounds.

Fenton (6-12) had its biggest offensive run late when Brittany Marqurdt and Jessica Komlo combined for a trio of shots from long-distance in the fourth quarter.

"Streamwood simply out-hustled us start to finish," said Fenton coach Tim Anderson. "They shot the ball well, they rebounded well and they played solid defense.

"George (Rosner) does a nice job with these girls."

Marqurdt and Samantha Rubright each finished with 6 points leading the Bison offense while starters Melanie Borshell and Maggie Smirat each added 4 points. Priya Ghayal also tacked on 4 points after entering the game late in the first quarter.

"When you compete in someone else's house, you have to come out playing hard," said Anderson. "Our defense picked up in the second half, but you've got to play all four quarters."

With the victory, Streamwood surpassed its overall win tally from last season.

"Defensively, this was one of our best efforts," said Sabre coach George Rosner. "We played a box defense, a 2-3 defense - we really mixed it up.

"Rebounding was dominant, and rebounding was key. We were giving them one shot and getting ourselves two or three shots on the other end."

Helping out on the boards, Melissa Oehlerking (6 points) finished with 7 rebounds. Arielle Gallione (4 rebounds), Danielle Cizowski (3 rebounds) and Michele Tomczak came off the bench to combined for a dozen more, and teammate Lizi Liberman added some points off the bench, finishing with five.

Caitlin Marchant was credited with 7 assists for Streamwood.

"Marchant put some point passes into players' hands tonight," said Rosner.

Freshman guard Amanda Patterson collected a pair of swipes, 3 rebounds and 4 points while marking and containing Fenton's big offensive threat in Rubright.

"Amanda had a very nice game offensively and defensively," Rosner said. "This was one of our most solid efforts. We played team ball on both ends."
