Man charged in car shooting incident

An 18-year-old Kane County man turned himself into authorities this week to face allegations he shot at a car Jan. 31 as it drove on McGough Road near Maple Park.

James A. Thorne Jr., who lives on McGough Road near where the incident took place, is charged with aggravated and reckless discharge of a firearm and possession of a firearm without a firearm owner's identification card, Kane County Sheriff's police said.

He was also charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

A 15-year-old Sycamore boy who police say was with Thorne at the time of the shooting has been charged with aggravated and reckless discharge of a firearm and possession of a firearm without a firearm owner's identification card. His case has been referred to Kane County juvenile court services.

The arrests culminated an investigation that began Jan. 31 when sheriff's police received a report that a car traveling down McGough might have been struck by an object.

Sheriff's Lt. Pat Gengler said investigators determined that the front fender on the driver's side had been struck by a bullet.

The investigation led detectives to Thorne's residence, where they located a .22-caliber rifle, sheriff's police said. Gengler said there was not enough evidence to file charges immediately.

Thorne's bond has been set at $35,000.
