Sugar Grove rejects ninth tax-hike plea

Voters handily rejected a tax-hike request from the Sugar Grove Public Library on Tuesday.

Unofficial totals show that 1,277 people voted no (60.3 percent) while 770 voted in favor (36.3 percent) of the request. It was the ninth request for a tax hike from the library.

Library officials asked for an increase of 11 cents per $100 of equalized assessed valuation in its tax rate so they could staff the new library building. The increase would have cost the owner of a $300,000 home an extra $100 in the first year, officials said.

Voters approved funding in 2004 for construction of the 25,500-square-foot library. Those dollars can't be used for operating expenses, officials said.
