LZ's Evans fires no-hitter

The sun was shining Wednesday afternoon - and so was Chas Evans.

All the Lake Zurich pitcher did was strike out 14 Zion-Benton batters on his way to a 3-0 no-hit shutout in the North Suburban Conference Lake Division.

Evans (4-0) went the distance and was just 2 walks from a perfect game.

"Chas had it all going today," said Bears coach Gary Simon. "He was in total command of the zone."

Led by shortstop Tanner Witt and catcher Jordan Johnson, the Bears (11-6-1) played rock-solid, errorless defense to back up Evans.

Offensively, Witt went 2-for-3 at the plate with a triple.

Libertyville 2, Stevenson 1: No surprise that the matchup between two of the best teams in the North Suburban came down to the wire.

Jon Lewis hit a game-winning single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to give the Wildcats (10-3) the win. Lewis also drove in Libertyville's other run in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game.

Pitcher Troy Barton threw 6 innings for the Wildcats, rolling up 10 strikeouts and allowing just 2 walks and 3 hits.

Reliever Brooks McDowell picked up the win.

Stevenson took just its second loss of the season, dropping to 11-2 overall. Clemson-bound pitcher Scott Firth (3-1) was dealt his first loss, despite racking up 11 strikeouts and allowing no walks.

Mundelein 11, Fenton 0: The Mustangs ran their record to 12-0 by getting it done on both the mound and at the plate. Pitcher Jay Mueller allowed just one Fenton hit and struck out six batters. Meanwhile Dillon Smith put up some nice numbers offensively. He went 2-for-2 with a double and a home run.

Grant 15, Westosha Central 3: Grant rolled up 15 hits en route to the monster victory.

Thomas Gier had a big day at the plate, pounding out a home run and 2 doubles. David Dickinson also had a double and got the win on the mound.

McHenry 11, Grayslake Central 0: McHenry put up 9 runs in the bottom of the third inning on its way to routing the Rams.

"We pretty much got our teeth kicked in today," Grayslake Central coach Troy Whalen said. "They hit everything we threw at them and we had no answers."

Angelo Gargano provided one bright spot for the 10-5 Rams. He hit a double.

Jacobs 13, Grayslake North 1: It was a lethal combination: Grayslake North gave up 11 hits and made 3 errors in dropping the Fox Valley Conference matchup.

Joe Bowes drove in the Knights' only run.
