Alcohol, speed blamed in fatal Waukegan crash
Waukegan police say alcohol and speed might have contributed to a traffic crash early Friday that killed a Northbrook man.
The crash happened about 2:20 a.m. when a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck went off the road and hit a parked semitrailer near LeBaron and Monroe streets.
Police said the driver, a 22-year-old Gurnee man, was flown to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. A front-seat passenger, Northbrook resident Andrew Galo, also 22, was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.
"After the accident the driver went to a residence in the area and asked the homeowner to summon police and fire," Waukegan Police Chief Artis Yancey said in a news release. "The investigation is ongoing, and police believe at this time alcohol and speed were contributing factors."
Lake County Coroner Richard Keller said an autopsy Friday showed Galo's preliminary cause of death was multiple injuries.
"Damage to the vehicle certainly was compatible with a high-speed accident," Keller said.
Police could not be reached for further comment.
