Huntley Area Public Library expands collection

These are not exactly the halcyon days for the Huntley Area Public Library.

Facing a space crunch and the fallout from voters' rejection of a tax increase, library staff have been taking small measures to restrain costs.

But thanks to $32,000 in developer fees the library recently received, the library will be able to add to its collection.

"It just gave us an opportunity to get some of these things we didn't have in our budget," said Virginia Maravilla, the library's executive director. "It's a one-time thing, but it did help us."

Library staff is using the grant to buy books on writing resumes, travel and parenting as well as fiction titles, DVDs, CDs and Playaways - mp3 players preloaded with audio books.

To make room for the new materials, the library is getting rid of some of its older materials. You can get some of these items at a bargain on Saturday at the Friends of the Huntley Library's book sale.

The book sale will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Old Village Hall on Coral Street in downtown Huntley. The book sale coincides with Huntley's Farmers' Market, which will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Coral Street.

The friends of the library are hosting a much bigger fundraiser later this month. The group is hosting its third annual golf outing fundraiser at 8:15 a.m. on July 15 at Pinecrest Golf and Country Club.

You can register at huntleylibrary.org/friends. The event costs $95 for one person and $360 for a group of four. Or you can skip the golf and just show up for lunch, at a cost of $20.
