Dundee Township Library to get new look

The Dundee Township Public Library will turn a new page later this summer when the 36-year-old building undergoes a $1.775 million renovation to recreate the library's public spaces.

The building will get an aesthetic makeover, organizing its collection of books, CDs, DVDs and periodicals into open, accessible areas for teens, electronic media and lounges where patrons can read quietly and sip coffee.

"One of our goals is (for patrons) to see this is a very comforting, welcoming place," interim Library Director Phyllis O'Neill said. "We really wanted to bring the library up to date."

Library officials considered other options, including a new facility and an expansion of the current library.

"The economy isn't in a place right now to support that public funding," O'Neill said, estimating a new building would cost at least $25 million. It would also require voter approval.

The library will pay for the renovations with cash reserves.

A 2008 evaluation by Chicago-based engineering firm PSA Dewberry found the building at 555 Barrington Ave. in East Dundee could not accommodate current technology and that several areas did not meet building codes. The library has not been renovated since it was built in 1973.

The renovations will include extensive mechanical updates to address these issues, as well as upgrades to the ventilation, and sewer systems.

The renovations are scheduled to begin July 27 and end in mid-September. The library will still circulate newer and popular items during that time. The building is scheduled to be closed from Aug. 5 to Aug. 10 while the library moves temporarily into a trailer.
