30 kids take part in Round Lake crafts class

Thirty children and their parents participated in the first bilingual paper crafts class at the Round Lake Area Public Library recently.

"I'm here just to have fun," said Hector Guillen as he folded a piece of paper into the shape of a pirate ship. "I like doing lots of art projects using scissors, doing art and drawing."

Taught by youth reference assistant Ana Guillen, the class focuses on how to make origami crafts, pop-up cards, and toys using scissors, glue and paper.

"I love to do crafts with paper and wanted to get the kids more involved in crafts," said Guillen. "It is a good thing for the kids and also that the parents are here."

Around the room, parents were also very involved in making their own crafts as they helped their children with the difficult parts.

"I like to learn new ideas," said Martina Rocha as she cut around the paper farm she was making. "I like to share time with my daughter, Jessica, and help her do the projects."

The program is one of several meant to attract more Hispanic community members to the library this summer.

The library also offers a preschool storytime in Spanish this summer for children ages 3 to 5, on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. through July 28, and on Fridays at 10:30 a.m. through July 31.
