Table tennis tourney
The Wheeling Park District will debut its new table tennis equipment starting 6:30 p.m. today at the Community Recreation Center gym, 333 W. Dundee Road. Test your skills on the park district's state-of-the-art equipment and play with professional Ping-Pong players. The 2001 Illinois State Champion, Engelbert Solis, will offer demonstrations. Admission is free. Starting Aug. 3, residents may drop in to play table tennis from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays. Lessons will be offered starting the week of Sept. 14 on Monday evenings for adults 18 years and older, and Thursday evenings for children 8 to 17 years old. For details, call (847) 465-2941.
Book sale is Saturday
Friends of the Arlington Heights Memorial Library, 500 N. Dunton Ave., will hold their bargain used book sale from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 1, with a silent auction from 9 to 2; and from noon to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, with the children's room closing at 3:30 p.m. On Sunday, a grocery bag full of books is $3. Public works center renamed
The renaming ceremony for the Hoffman Estates Public Works Center Building to the Susan H. Kenley-Rupnow Center will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, 2305 W. Pembroke Ave., Hoffman Estates. The guest speaker is Kris Beutel, Kenley-Rupnow's daughter. Kenley-Rupnow, a trustee for 20 years, died Feb. 14. She also was a member of the Township High School District 211 school board and the Children's Advocacy Center board. She was a past district director for the Boy Scouts of America, a former president of the Schaumburg Jaycees, as well as a youth softball and soccer coach and an elder of Church of the Cross. She owned Target Promotions for 14 years and most recently worked for Cabela's. For details, call (847) 781-2610.
