Shame on council for messing with rebates

It's hard to believe that our Elgin leaders we voted into office want to take our $200 senior citizen tax rebate and give us instead vouchers to spend downtown. Many seniors can't pay their utility bills or even buy their medications. Now our city leaders want us to exchange our food and medications for a place to eat, grab a cup of coffee, see a band or get a haircut.

I think I stand for the many of us struggling seniors on fixed incomes that say "no." Please don't take away what little we have. Many seniors struggle to keep their homes and pay their real estate taxes. Many can't drive or even walk. How do you expect them to struggle to go downtown for a cup of coffee? Haven't you heard that sometimes seniors can't pay their heat bills and freeze to death in winter?

Shame on you, Mayor Ed Shock, Councilman Robert Gilliam and Councilman Richard Dunne for trying to exploit the senior citizens of Elgin that voted you into office. We expect more from our leaders than that.

Thank you, Daily Herald reporter Harry Hitzeman, for keeping the citizens of Elgin informed on what's going on in the council meetings. That's what keeps selling your newspaper.
