No injuries in fire at Fifth Avenue Station
Fire broke out at Fifth Avenue Station near downtown Naperville Thursday afternoon, but caused little damage and no injuries, fire officials say.
They are lauding the quick thinking of a resident of the building for pulling the fire alarm after smelling and seeing smoke.
"Really, all in all, it was a lot less serious than it could have been," Deputy Chief Mike Zywanski said. "The person who alerted the fire department by pulling the fire alarm did a great thing."
The building, 200 E. Fifth Ave., is a former furniture factory that is now filled with apartments, offices, shops and restaurants.
A resident smelled smoke and saw a "light smoke haze," on the fourth floor about 1:35 p.m., according to firefighters. The person pulled the hallway fire alarm and brought emergency personnel to the scene within three minutes.
Firefighters determined the fire was coming from the bathroom of a fourth-floor apartment and was caused by a malfunctioning ceiling exhaust fan.
While the fire did not spread far, smoke accumulated in adjacent apartments. Upon extinguishing the fire, crews remained on the scene for about 45 minutes to ventilate the smoke and conduct salvage and overhaul operations.
No one was injured and occupants and businesses were allowed back into the building within an hour.
The apartment where the fire originated and its contents sustained about $6,000 in damage.
