Dundee Twp. library begins new chapter

The Dundee Township Public Library is ready to be checked out.

After a two-month, $1.7 million renovation to update and modernize its public spaces, the library at 555 Barrington Ave., in East Dundee, reopens Friday with an open house from 4 to 7 p.m.

Patrons are invited to explore the light-filled interior with its new book stacks, comfortable lounge areas and upgraded technology centers.

"The design is enduring," interim library Director Phyllis O'Neill said. "It is fun and comfortable. And it is more inviting for people to take a book and sit on the couch or pull up a chair and enjoy."

O'Neill said the project was completed under budget and on time.

Lauree Reed, principal for ReedDesign Group of Algonquin, said the project's intent was to open up the cramped interiors and energize the space using natural light, bright colors and modern fixtures. The library had not been renovated since it was built in 1973.

"We wanted to bring the outside in," Reed said. "The space was dull and jumbled. There wasn't a clear path through the space, and now we have ceiling soffits and carpeting to guide you."

Instead of rows of books blocking the view, the outdoors are now accessible through floor-to-ceiling windows visible from every vantage point of the library's main floor.

These days, Reed said, libraries must compete for clientele with retail bookstores with lounge areas and coffee shops. The coffee shop feel can be found throughout the library, particularly in the updated teen section that has a plethora of seating and two cafe-style tables and chairs. Patrons can also enjoy the library's coffee station.

In addition to the public space enhancements, mechanical upgrades to the building's ventilation and sewer systems also were completed.
