Who's Who of Owls?

The public is invited to the Lake County Audubon Society's general meeting at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Libertyville village hall, 118 W. Cook Ave. Ornithologist Mark Spreyer, executive director of the Stillman Nature Center in Barrington and president of the Audubon Council of Illinois, will speak about North American owls and other birds of prey in "Who's Who of Owls." His articles on birds of prey have appeared in various publications, including Birder's World and the Journal of the Association of Avian Veterinarians. He also has worked with the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, National Audubon Society and Chicago Academy of Sciences and teaches environmental biology at the College of Lake County. Tax assessment help center

Lake County's Chief Assessment Office hosts a tax assessment help center, 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, at University Center, 1200 University Center Drive, Grayslake. The center offers personal assistance to check assessment valuation using the county's Internet site and outline steps to appeal. At the session, the assessment office staff will explain the assessment valuation process, new property tax assessment and options for an appeal. Route 137 work

The Illinois Department of Transportation plans to resurface more than six miles of Route 137 from Blanchard Road to Russell Road in Winthrop Harbor and Beach Park. Funding for the project was included in a comprehensive statewide capital construction plan passed by the General Assembly earlier this year, according to state Sen. Michael Bond of Grayslake. IDOT confirmed the nearly $5 million state contract will be awarded to Peter Baker & Son, Co., he added. Work is expected to begin sometime this month.

Learn about the Net

The Vernon Area Public Library in Lincolnshire is offering classes to help you search the Internet more effectively. The program is set to run Wednesday, 1 to 3 p.m. or 6:45 to 8:45 p.m., and again Thursday, 1 to 3 p.m. Admission is free but is limited to library cardholders.
