District wins award:

Lincolnshire-Prairie View School District 103 has received the SchoolSearch 2009 Bright A+ Award. District 103 is one of eight elementary school districts in Lake County and one of 36 elementary districts in the state to receive this award. The prize is based on standardized test scores for reading and math. SchoolSearch is an educational consulting and research firm that ranks schools and provides information for districts, families, corporations and other groups.

You can learn how to use the photo-sharing Web site Flickr through a program at the Vernon Area Public Library in Lincolnshire. The class is set for 7 p.m. Oct. 22. Admission is free, but limited to Vernon library cardholders. Registration is required. To register, call (847) 634-3650 or visit vapld.info.

Food collected at homecoming:

The Vernon Hills High School homecoming parade begins at 6:15 p.m. Thursday and as last year, students will collect canned goods and nonperishable food items along the way. The parade begins at Cherokee Park in the Deerpath subdivision, then travels north to Phillip Road, east to Lakeview Parkway to Fairway Drive to the high school. The village will provide a small truck to collect food from onlookers. Donations will be split between the Libertyville and Vernon township food pantries. The pep rally starts at 7:30 p.m. at the stadium and fireworks are scheduled for 8:15 p.m. Deerpath residents and employees in the Continental Executive Park may experience minor traffic delays during the parade as traffic will not be allowed on the parade route. On Friday, the sophomores play Wauconda at 5 p.m. and the varsity plays at 7:30 p.m. The freshman team will play at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

Millburn church hosts blood drive:

Millburn Congregational United Church of Christ hosts a blood drive Sunday, Oct. 11 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Representatives from LifeSource, will be at the church at Route 45 and Grass Lake Road in Millburn. Appointments are being taken to assure fast and efficient donations. Call the church at (847) 356-5237, or Kevin Cloonan at (224) 406-1821 for more details. Millburn Church's mission committee is sponsoring this event in order to support the community and provide opportunities to help others, church leaders said.
