Health care round-table:

State Rep. Carol Sente will host a senior health care round-table discussion from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13 at The Park at Vernon Hills, 145 N. Milwaukee Ave., Vernon Hills. The event will provide information on issues facing elderly citizens. Donna Copeland Hill, a community planner for the Northeastern Illinois Area Agency on Aging, will outline programs and resources available for seniors. Call (847) 680-5909 for more information. Sente represents the 59th District which includes central Lake County and a portion of northern Cook County.

Get picnic permits:

Lake County Forest Preserve District picnic shelter permits for 2010 will be available for sale starting at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17. Initial permit purchases may only be made at the district's main office, 2000 N. Milwaukee Ave., Libertyville. After noon that day, online sales will be permitted at lcfpd.org. Telephone reservations begin Oct. 19.

Store your boat:

The Lake County Forest Preserve District offers indoor boat storage for the off-season. Boats can be kept at the Fox River Preserve and Marina, 26034 Roberts Road, Port Barrington. For information, call (847) 381-0669.

Learn about edible science:

Pretzels, chewing gum and candy are among the tasty treats that will be examined in a program called "Edible Science" at the Vernon Area Public Library. The program is set for 7 p.m. Nov. 4 at the library, 300 Olde Half Day Road, Lincolnshire. It's free to attend and open to second- through eighth-graders who are accompanied by caregivers.
