Mom says twins unlocked gate, drowned in pool
MORGAN HILL, Calif. -- Family members of twin California girls who drowned in the backyard pool say the toddlers managed to gain access by unlocking a gate.
Two-year-olds Annalise and Aspen Niva-Wiggle were found in the water Sunday afternoon. One died en route to Stanford University Medical Center; the other was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The twins' mother, Lisa Niva, says she was resting in her bedroom while the children were playing on the deck. Their father was in the garage.
At some point, the girls wandered to the pool, and their grandmother believes Annalise managed to unlock the gate.
Santa Clara County sheriff's detectives are investigating the case as "unattended deaths" until they're confirmed to be accidental drownings.
