Woodridge salon helps fight breast cancer

At any given moment, odds are most chairs in a salon are filled by women. And sadly, the odds are good that someone in the room has been touched by breast cancer - as a patient, a caregiver, a family member or a friend.

The staff at Salon Aria know they owe their livelihood to their female clientele, so for the second year they're donating a night of service to help fight the disease that disproportionately strikes women. The event, on Thursday, Oct. 15, at the Woodridge salon, offers discounted services along with a remembrance ceremony and entertainment.

The salon's Samantha Robertson tells us more about the event.

Q. What is your goal?

A. To raise money and awareness for breast cancer research, and to honor the brave women affected by breast cancer.

Q. How do you work toward accomplishing that?

A. On Oct. 15, we are hosting a night of beauty services, raffles, a luminaria ceremony, games, food and drinks. All money raised that evening will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Q. How does the fundraiser work?

A. We will be doing discounted beauty services, and we are having a luminaria ceremony to honor those affected by breast cancer. Luminaria bags can be purchased for a $5 donation.

We'll have a raffle with amazing prizes like gift cards to stores and restaurants or gift baskets with coffee, makeup or perfume.

We also will be having games, Lia Sophia jewelry, food and drinks from Jimmy Johns, Tilted Kilt, Panera and Buffalo Wild Wings.

You can make an appointment at (630) 769-1956, or just stop in with friends and family. It's going to be a fun night for a great cause.

Q. When and why did the salon start this fundraiser?

A. Last year we hosted our first breast cancer fundraiser. Our salon wanted to host a night to raise money and awareness for breast cancer.

The beauty industry caters mainly to women, and too many women are affected by this disease. We have many clients, friends and family who have been affected by breast cancer, and this is our chance to try to help fight this disease.

Q. How did things go?

A. Last year was a huge success. We raised more than $2,500 to donate. This year we are hoping to raise even more.
