Elk Grove claims Ray Maxwell championship

Averaging over 937 pins per game, Elk Grove's girls bowling team easily won the 2009 Ray Maxwell Holiday Tournament on Saturday at Streamwood Lanes.

The Grenadiers (5,625 total pins) were led by the Saturday's top bowler, junior Carolina Williams with a 6-game total of 1,276 pins. Williams won her second straight individual title at Streamwood. Her teammates Ashley Dolce (5th) and Sarah Bunta (7th), also finished in the Top 10 with total pinfalls of 1,172 and 1,135 respectively.

"We definitely worked as a team," said Elk Grove coach Kim Sander. "We struggled a little bit in the beginning, but we worked through it."

Other Grenadiers to post scores were Tedra Tado (1,049), Sarah Ray (695) and Micela Powell (298).

Rolling Meadows (5,297) finished second, while DeKalb (5,284), Jacobs (5,111), Romeoville (4,960), Willowbrook (4,937), Grant (4,930), Lake Zurich (4,928), Leyden (4,865) and Libertyville (4,774) rounded out the Top 10.

Second-place high series went to Brie Brugioni of Grant with a 1,269. Brandi Underwood (1,201, DeKalb), Tegan Clinton (1,174, Downers Grove North), Katia Smith (1,165, Rolling Meadows), Paula Noh (1,106, Rolling Meadows), Mariah McVay (1,101, Buffalo Grove) and Jessica Wall (1,100, Romeoville) rounded out the Top 10 individually.

Jacobs, which finished in fourth, was led by Becca Payne and Jenn Rood with total pinfalls of 1,074 and 1,073 respectively. Sarah Siska (1,014), Ashley Rood (1,008) and Gianna Scarpelli (942) finished the Golden Eagles' scoring.

"We have a good set of girls," said Jacobs coach Jim Benson. "We did well today, we just ran into a couple of rough spots in the third game."

South Elgin (4,645) finished in 15th, Bartlett (4,557) 19th, Elgin (4,449) 24th, Larkin (4,099) 28th, Streamwood (3,710) 29th and St. Edward (3,413) 30th.

"When we are on we are on," said Larkin coach Rich Heisel. "I believe we can put it all together."

Larkin was led by Rose Danielek with a 986. South Elgin's Meagan Edgren bowled a 1,061. Elgin's Amanda Nowak knocked down 1,010 pins while St. Edward's Rebecca Stellato finished with a 735.

High scores per game went to Jackie Funk (Libertyville, 267), Williams (246), Smith of Rolling Meadows (247), McVay (250), Brugioni (264) and Maura Wren of Willowbrook (266).

The consolation championship went to Fremd with a total pinfall of 4,697.
