Althoff a whiz at chemistry, politics

Dear Sen. Althoff:

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for speaking to my class, Chemistry 115, at MCC recently.

Your discussion of links that exist among such topics as technology, government, politics and the citizens' influence in making government aware of their needs was excellent. These topics tie directly into the course's objectives of demonstrating technology's influence on our daily lives.

As a current example, you indicated that you were assisting an entrepreneur from Illinois who was looking for help to market his concept for removing carbon dioxide from our air that could then be converted back into fuel. Your position was that this technology would not only remove global warming gases but also increase jobs for the people of our state.

Done correctly, government can help create jobs. It doesn't need to spend tax dollars to do so. I could not have better shown the connection between government's role in assisting new business, which will create jobs, and science than you did. You were very effective in pointing this out to my students.

Your nonpartisan approach was typical of your professional demeanor and interest in the people over politics.

On behalf of McHenry County College, thank you again for speaking to my class.
