It's official: de los Cobos to coach Fire

Fire officials confirmed that Carlos de los Cobos will be the new coach they introduce at a press conference Monday.

De los Cobos, 51, spent the past four years guiding El Salvador's national team through the latest round of World Cup qualifying, placing fifth in the Hexagonal and falling short of a World Cup berth. He resigned in December.

In 17 years as a defender he played for a number of teams in Mexico, including Club Pachuca, UANL Tigres and Club America. He also played for the Mexico national team, earning 25 caps and appearing in the 1986 World Cup, where Mexico reached the quarterfinals.

He later served as an assistant coach with the Mexico national team under Bora Milutinovic and Manuel Lapuente.

De los Cobos replaces Denis Hamlett, whose contract was not renewed. His first duty will be working with techical director Frank Klopas on Thursday's MLS SuperDraft.
