Elgin police investigate shooting at Wing Park

Elgin police have arrested one man and are searching for another after a gang shooting near Wing Park on the city's west side that occurred at around noon Friday.

Elgin Police Lt. Bill Wolf said detectives are looking for a man who is believed to be armed.

The man was last seen running northwest between apartment buildings west of Wing Park.

Wolf said police arrested another man at Aldine Avenue and Wing Street. The Elgin man has not been charged yet.

"We have one person in custody. It's a gang-related incident," he said.

Wolf said two cars - a black Toyota and a gray Chrysler - with at least two gang members in each, drove by each other at Wing Street and Weston Avenue.

The men began yelling at each other and when one tried to calm the situation, another man pulled a gun and fired at least five shots, Wolf said.

Wolf said it was a chance meeting between the rival groups.

"There's no indication that the people involved lived in that area," he said.

Witnesses who were in the park reported hearing a loud crash and saw the gray Chrysler with its wheels spinning pushing a black sedan.

The gray car then sped off eastbound on Wing Street from Aldine Avenue.

The other car pulled into a lot in Wing Park near the golf course, and a man jumped out and ran between apartment buildings west of the park.
