League discusses housing

Housing for people with mental illness is the subject of the League of Women Voters' meeting on 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 18, at the Arlington Heights Historical Society, 110 W. Freemont St. This event is free and open to the public.

Mary Lou Lowry of the North/Northwest Suburban Task Force and a member of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, will talk about the need for housing that also offers support services.

Supportive living facilities, which provide small apartments for residents and have offices for mental health and social workers, are the ideal, she believes. She will bike to Washington, D.C., this spring to raise $100,000 in donations for the task force's proposed supportive housing.

Tax deductible donations can be made to North/Northwest Suburban Task Force, c/o Mary Lou Lowry, 535 Cottage, Glen Ellyn, IL 60137.

The League's position on mental health services can be found at lwvil.org/mentalhealth.asp.
