Reach out and run for a cause in Libertyville

It's nearly spring and all your winter excuses for not lacing up the running and walking shoes are coming to an end.

If you're looking for motivation to get your legs pumping, now's the time to register for a charity run planned for next month in Libertyville.

The fourth annual Reach Out & Run/Walk 5K and Kid's Fun Run is set for Saturday, April 10 at Independence Grove Forest Preserve.

All proceeds go to the St. Vincent DePaul Society, organized through St. Gilbert Catholic Church in Grayslake and St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Gurnee.

It's the first run of the season at the scenic location, race organizers said. Online registration and other details are found at reachoutandrun5k.org. Same day registration begins at 7 a.m. The run/walk starts at 8 a.m.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, the international Catholic social service group, provides temporary help to individuals and families in financial crisis.

Race organizer Diane Walkowiak said the needs are great and officials hope for a big turnout.

"The St. Vincent de Paul organization is a wonderful group," she said. "They don't just hand money to needy people, but are committed to sit down and look over the person's financial situation and offer help on budgeting and ways to reduce debt. They'll often refer people to other agencies that can fill needs that St. Vincent can't."

The event has been averaging at least 500 participants and raised about $10,000 last year from entry fees and other donations, Walkowiak said.

The first 500 people to register for the 5K will get T-shirts; T-shirts will be given to all participants in the Kid's Fun Run, race officials said. Registration is $30 for the 5K run and $15 for the Kid's run. Donations can also be made through the Web site.

It's no small task pulling off the event. Walkowiak said it takes at least 80 volunteers, and support from corporate sponsors to be successful.

"We get some incredible donations," she said. "People are generous. First, second and third place winners get medals. It's a great time for everyone."
