Streamwood man charged in Chase Bank robbery
A 45-year-old Streamwood man has been charged with the May 21 robbery of a Chase Bank in Streamwood.
Karl L. Keller of the 1000 block of Meadow Lane was arrested by Streamwood police and FBI agents late Friday following a weeklong investigation and was charged in federal court Saturday morning.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael T. Mason ordered Keller held without bond pending his next court appearance.
According to the FBI's complaint against Keller, he was recognized by two witnesses who claimed to know him for years in surveillance photos released to the media after the robbery.
The complaint also states that during his post-arrest interview and after having been read his Miranda rights, Keller admitted to having robbed the bank.
Keller reportedly stated that he handed the teller a demand letter containing letters cut out of a magazine.
According to the original report, the Chase Bank branch was robbed at 5:33 p.m. May 21 by a man who approached a teller after waiting in line for a brief time.
The robber reportedly opened a folder containing a note made up of multiple colored letters that appeared to be either stickers or cut from a magazine.
The teller reported not being able to read the entire note but remembered something to the effect of "need money" and "not kidding."
The robber then reportedly said "Money now!" in a forceful voice before the teller gave him $1,000 in $5 and $10 bills.
The teller described the robber as being approximately in his late 40s, about 5 feet 8 inches tall with a medium build, hazel eyes and a light colored mustache. His clothing was described as a black jacket and a black or dark blue baseball cap.
Illinois Secretary of State records describe Keller as 45 years old, 5 feet 9 inches tall and having hazel eyes.
One of the witnesses who reported recognizing Keller in the surveillance photos further claimed to have seen Keller wearing dark clothing during the early evening hours of the day the bank was robbed, reports said.
