Grant alum Kazlausky named head baseball coach at Air Force
Major Mike Kazlausky, a former Grant High School baseball standout, has been appointed the head baseball coach at the U.S. Air Force Academy.
Kazlausky, a 1991 Academy graduate, has served the last six years as an assistant coach at the Academy.
He is recognized as one of the most inspirational players to wear the Air Force baseball uniform.
Kazlausky walked on the team, started all four years and left holding eight career records. He ranks among the top six in nine of the 13 offensive categories.
After his baseball career with the Falcons, he spent three seasons from 1993-95 as an assistant coach to former head coach Paul Mainieri, who now directs the Lousiana State program.
At Grant, Kazlausky was all-conference for three years and an all-stater his senior year.
Volleyball
The Warren High School volleyball program will offer its co-ed feeder skills camp June 14-25.
Passing, setting, serving and hitting skills will be developed through a variety of repetitive drills and movements.
There will be work in small groups with lots of individual attention and quality ball touches. Competitive drills in game-type situations will also be used.
General skills camp is designed to teach the mechanics of excellent fundamental volleyball skills. The camp will cater to all skill levels, and campers will be placed in ability groups to best challenge their needs.
Coaches include the current Warren staff, college athletes and advanced players.
It is for third- through eighth-graders and will be held at the Warren Almond Campus from 8:30-11 a.m. in the fieldhouse. Cost is $100.

Baseball
Freshman Kurt Schmidt (Grayslake Central) has been named to the 2010 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin all-conference baseball team.
Schmidt garnered an infield spot on the second team.
He was a fixture at shortstop for coach Greg Wallace from Day One.
He played in all 40 contests, starting 39, including the first 28 of the season.
He was one of just two freshmen - and the only first-year position player- selected to this year's all-conference team.
Schmidt led the Vikings with 45 runs scored and ranked second in batting average (.364).
• Carthage sophomore first baseman Joey Aiello (Libertyville), who batted .400 with 18 doubles, 2 triples, 6 home runs and 52 RBI, was named to the All-Central region second team of the American Baseball Coaches Association.
Female athlete of year
The Aurora University female athlete of the year award was presented to senior pitcher Anna Snyder (Grayslake).
She was the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) softball player of the year and Aurora female athlete of the year for the second consecutive season.
Snyder was also a National Fastpitch Coaches Association first-team all-region selection.
She rewrote the Spartans record books in all pitching categories.
She has established marks in career strikeouts (816), wins (79), games started (85), complete games (63) and innings pitched (5291/3) for the Spartans.
Men's track and field
Carthage tied for 36th place at the NCAA Division III outdoor track and field championship at Baldwin-Wallace College's Finnie Stadium in Berea, Ohio. Sophomore Derek Hall (Grant) was a member of the 1600-meter qualifying relay team.
Women's basketball
Carthage coach Tim Bernero announced a verbal commitment from Lake Zurich guard Gabby Chapa.
The 5-foot-9 Chapa was named Daily Herald all-area honorable mention her senior year and was the MVP of the Lake County All-Star Game.
Football
Carthage wide receiver Jeff Koeneman capped off his college football career by receiving the Jack Swartz All-Academic award (3.6 GPA), the offensive MVP award and the Most Outstanding Career award at Carthage. He was also named the Wisconsin Private School player of the year by the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association at the Hall of Fame Awards banquet in Madison.
Water polo
Junior Colleen Briggs (Rolling Meadows), a junior at Miami (Ohio), was named to the Collegiate Water Polo Association's Midwest Division women's club all-conference first team.
Athlete of the year
Ingrid Stensvaag (Palatine) is the Wisconsin-Whitewater female student athlete of the year. She keyed three straight WIAC tennis championships and appearances in three NCAA Division III championship tournaments.
Women's rowing
Junior Adrienne Darrow (Barrington) helped Williams College (Williamstown, Mass.) win its fifth straight NCAA Division III national rowing championship at Lake Folsom, Calif. Darrow was also named a 2010 scholar athlete by the Collegiate Rowing Association and was named a co-captain of Williams women's crew for the 2010-11 season.
