Minor accident delays commuters, Hawks fans

Morning commuters - and plenty of eager Blackhawks fans - were inconvenienced but no one was hurt Friday morning when an empty passenger train struck an unoccupied vehicle in downtown Glen Ellyn, authorities said.

The westbound Metra train, which was being transferred from one location to another for staging purposes on the busy morning, was moving slowly through town when it struck the vehicle.

Police said the vehicle was heading south on Main Street and crossing the tracks about 8:15 a.m. when it broke down. The motorist got out of the vehicle before the train struck the driver's side.

The accident caused delays on the Metra West Line crowded with both commuters and fans heading toward the Blackhawks' victory parade.

Metra spokesman Tom Miller said affected passengers were delayed for about an hour.

Others faced additional delays because trains that were full ran express to Chicago, Miller said.

Metra is running more trains on all its lines today.

"Most of our routes are running 10 to 15 minutes behind systemwide due to increased traffic," Miller said.
