Scouting Maine West at Niles North

Maine West (2-5, 1-2) at Niles North (1-6, 0-3)

When: 7 p.m. today at Chuck Pos Stadium

Last week: Maine West d. Maine East 26-12; Niles North lost to Deerfield 31-23

Outlook: Maine West has a shot at its highest win total since it was 5-4 in 2005 and will try to avenge a 28-13 loss last year. But it won't be easy for the Warriors as Niles North led 5-2 Deerfield 14-3, 17-10 at half and 23-17. "They could have won that game and in some cases should have won that game," said Maine West coach Chris Hare. Niles North junior Oshayne Brown rushed for 87 yards and a TD and standout LB George Neuhaus had 15 tackles. The Warriors are short two offensive linemen with injuries but QB Ziggy Krycka had a gutsy 162-yard effort running and throwing last week after hurting his leg against Glenbrook North. MLB Mike Farias, DE Ethan Slopecki (3 pass knockdowns) and sophomore Raul Anaya (3 interceptions) led the defense. "Our kids really stepped up to the plate with all the injuries," Hare said.
