Notre Dame honors Sullivan before football game

The University of Notre Dame held a moment of silence for Declan Sullivan before its football game Saturday against Tulsa in South Bend, Ind.

Sullivan, a 20-year-old junior from Long Grove, died Wednesday while shooting video of a team practice when the scissor-lift tower he was on overturned in high winds.

Director of Athletics Jack Swarbrick said the university had considered canceling Saturday's game, but instead opted to dedicate it to Sullivan.

Fighting Irish football players, who attended a memorial mass for Sullivan Thursday, paid homage by wearing shamrock decals with his initials on their helmets, as did Tulsa players as well.

Sullivan, a film, television and theater major at the university, had been hired to tape football practices. The Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating to determine why Sullivan was up in the tower in dangerous conditions.

A wake is set for Sunday afternoon at the Ahlgrim Family Funeral Home in Lake Zurich. A funeral mass is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church, 10 N. Buffalo Grove Road, Buffalo Grove.

Sullivan also was an alumnus and football player at Carmel High School in Mundelein, which similarly honored him with a moment of silence before Friday's victory over Elgin.
