The Golden Dragon Acrobats represent the best of a time honored tradition that began more than 25 centuries ago. Acrobatics in China evolved from daily life. Tables, chairs, jars, plates and bowls were used as performance props. During the Han Dynasty (221 BC – 220 AD) music was added and it soon came to be known as the “Hundred Plays.” Over this long and rich history, it has developed as one of the most popular art forms among the Chinese people.

The troupe's creator, producer and director, Danny Chang, comes from a long line of acrobats. His father, Chang Lien Chi, founded the Chinese Golden Dragon Acrobats in Taiwan. Danny Chang started his acrobatic career at the age of 7, and after apprenticing with his father for 17 years, inherited the troupe in 1985 and brought it from a small group to a world renowned company.

In 2005, the Golden Dragon Acrobats made their Broadway debut to a sold-out audience. Nominated for two New York Drama Desk Awards for Unique Theatrical Experience and Best Choreography, the ancient art of Chinese acrobatics comes to life on The Hemmens stage with traditional dance and spectacular costumes.

The Hemmens Cultural Center, located at the corner of Symphony Way and North Grove Avenue in Elgin, is easily accessible from I-90. Driving directions are available at www.hemmens.org. Parking is free.
