On the Lincoln bookshelf

Encourage your children of all ages to read about Abraham Lincoln.

In honor of the 200th anniversary of our log cabin president's birth in 2009, the Chicago Public Library, the City of Chicago and the Chicago History Museum worked together to assemble a list of Lincoln-related books for children from age 3 to 14.

The complete list of 83 books is still available under “Land of Lincoln Readers” at chicagohistory.org.

For instance, the wide ranging list of both fiction and non-fiction books includes:

Ÿ“L is for Lincoln: An Illinois Alphabet” by Kathy Jo Wargin (ages 4-8)

Ÿ“Abe Lincoln Goes to Washington: 1837-1865” by Cheryl Harnes (ages 9-12)

Ÿ“Mrs. Lincoln's Dressmaker: The Unlikely Friendship of Elizabeth Keckley and Mary Todd Lincoln” by Lynda Jones (ages 10-13)

There are even books listed which delve into various aspects of the Civil War including:

Ÿ“A Separate Battle: Women and the Civil War” by Ina Chang (ages 8-13)

Ÿ“Yankee Blue or Rebel Gray?: The Civil War Adventures of Sam Shaw” by Kate Connell (ages 8-13)
